Potential Water Leak Information

There are several ways to attempt to detect a water leak in your home.

When in doubt, call a plumber. If the leak is not found within your home, call the Village Clerk-Treasurers office to report a leak at (607)739-5691

Keep Track of Water Usage

If there is a significant difference between water bills, there may be a leak. However, more water tends to be used in the summer months.

Meter
Check Your Water Meter

Village of Horseheads water meters are generally located in a utility room or basement. Pick a time where you can conveniently turn off the water to your house. Prior to turning off the water, check your meter the flow meter will be moving clockwise when there is water in use. Once the water is turned off (make sure no one is using any water), check the meter again- if the needle or low flow indicator is moving, you have a leak somewhere.

Toilet
Check Your Toilets

Toilets use a lot of water. To test for leaks, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 10 minutes and check the bowl. If the color is present in the bowl, you have a leak allowing water from the tank to flow to the bowl without even flushing. This could be a simple fix of the toilets flapper (a rubber stopper in the tank that prevents water from entering the bowl until you flush). These parts are sold at all hardware stores, or you can call a professional plumber to fix the leak.

Leaking Faucet
Check Your Faucets and Showerheads

Faucet leaks usually occur from worn out parts or loose connections. The faucet could be dripping or it could be leaking under the sink or tub. Replace worn fittings, replace the faucet, tighten the tubing, or have the water supply tubing replaced are options to stop leaks.

Showerheads should be cleaned at least annually to remove mineral build up that may cause leaks. Replace the O ring inside the showerhead if necessary for a tighter seal. Apply plumbers tape when you are installing or re-installing a showerhead to prevent leaking.  If your showerhead is older, replacing it is a good idea to prevent leaks.

Leaking Hose
Check Your Garden Hose

Check to make sure your garden hose is securely screwed on to your faucet and that your nozzle is tightly fastened. If you are not actively using your hose, turn off the faucet to prevent any leaking from occurring.
